British Citizenship Through Marriage — Naturalisation for Spouses and Civil Partners
Marriage to a British citizen does not give automatic citizenship, but it can change the residence period and timing. We advise spouses and civil partners on the safest route to apply.
The Marriage Route
If you are married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen, you may be able to apply based on three years’ residence rather than five. You must still hold ILR or settled status and meet the other naturalisation requirements.
This route is often misunderstood. The date you obtained ILR, your absence history and whether the relationship is continuing all matter.
Current fee
The adult naturalisation fee is £1,709 from 8 April 2026.
