Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for naturalisation?

Adults who hold ILR or settled status and meet the residence, absence, English language, Life in the UK and good character requirements may be eligible.

Do I need to wait 12 months after ILR?

Most applicants must hold ILR or settled status for 12 months before applying, unless they are married to or in a civil partnership with a British citizen.

What are the absence limits?

The standard route normally requires no more than 450 days outside the UK in five years and no more than 90 days in the final 12 months.

What is Form AN?

Form AN is the online naturalisation application form for adults applying to become British citizens.

What documents are required?

Common documents include passport, ILR or settled status evidence, Life in the UK pass, English evidence and residence evidence.

What if I have criminal convictions?

You should seek advice before applying. Criminal history, cautions and overseas matters can affect good character.

What is the current adult naturalisation fee?

From 8 April 2026, the Home Office adult naturalisation fee is £1,709. Other costs, such as tests or document services, may be separate.

How long does a nationality application take?

Many applications take several months. Timing depends on the route, the evidence and whether the Home Office asks for further information.

Do I need a solicitor?

It is not mandatory, but nationality law is technical. Advice is especially important where there are absences, criminal history, immigration breaches, complex parentage or previous refusals.

Can NA Law prepare the whole application?

Yes. We can assess eligibility, prepare evidence, draft representations, complete forms and manage correspondence.
