British Citizenship by Descent — Was One of Your Parents British?
You may already be British, or you may have a route to registration, if a parent or grandparent was British. We assess nationality by birth, parentage, dates and historic rules.
How Citizenship by Descent Works
British nationality by descent is technical. A person born outside the UK may be British if one parent was British otherwise than by descent at the time of birth. In other cases, registration may be possible where historic law or family circumstances created an unfair gap.
What We Check
Birth and Parentage
Your place and date of birth, your parents’ status and whether the relevant parent could pass citizenship on.
Historic Rules
Nationality law changed over time. Gender discrimination, unmarried parents and adoption can all affect the route.
Documents
We identify the evidence needed to prove the route or support a registration application.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is citizenship by descent?
It is British citizenship passed from a British parent to a child born outside the UK, subject to strict rules.
Does it pass through grandparents?
Usually citizenship by descent passes one generation, but historic discrimination and registration routes can create exceptions.
Am I automatically British?
Possibly. It depends on your date and place of birth, your parents’ status and whether your British parent was British otherwise than by descent.
What if my parents were not married?
The rules have changed over time. Some people may have a registration route where historic rules treated them unfairly.
What are UKF and UKM applications?
They are registration routes used in some cases involving unmarried fathers or mothers where historic nationality law caused unfair outcomes.
Do I need to naturalise?
If you are already British, you do not naturalise. If you are not automatically British, registration or another route may be needed.
What documents are needed?
Birth certificates, parents’ birth and marriage records, passports, naturalisation certificates and adoption documents may be relevant.
Can NA Law check my family tree?
Yes. We can review family documents and advise whether there is a citizenship or registration route.
