Quick answer: when is UK Expansion Worker appropriate?
UK Expansion Worker may be appropriate for an overseas business sending senior or specialist staff to establish a first UK presence before the UK business starts trading. This route also functions as a genuine self-sponsorship option, since the senior overseas worker can act as their own company’s sponsor licence contact.
NA Law Solicitors can help with: UK expansion evidence, sponsor licence strategy, senior worker applications and compliance planning. Related advice: HNW immigration, Global Talent, Innovator Founder and Global Business Mobility.
Expand into the UK Market with the Right Visa Support
The UK Expansion Worker Visa is part of the Global Business Mobility (GBM) scheme, offering overseas companies a structured route to send senior managers or specialist employees to the UK to establish a branch. Ideal for non-UK companies not yet trading in the UK, this visa supports business expansion while complying with immigration requirements.
Eligibility Requirements for the UK Expansion Worker Visa
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be aged 18 or over.
- Work for a linked overseas business for at least 12 months (exemptions for high earners or specific trade agreements).
- Have a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a UK-based sponsor (Home Office licensed).
- Be paid at least £52,500 or the appropriate going rate for the occupation (accurate as at 16 July 2026).
- Perform a role at RQF Level 6 (graduate level).
Exemptions apply to Japanese and Australian nationals under respective trade agreements and individuals earning over £73,900.
Duration and extension of stay
- Initial stay: Up to 12 months (plus 14 days if applicable).
- Extension: One additional 12-month term permitted.
- Total stay limit: 2 years on this route.
- Important restriction: A cumulative cap of 5 years in any 6-year period applies across all Global Business Mobility routes.
Benefits of the Expansion Worker Visa
- Work in your sponsored role.
- Study or take up voluntary work in the UK.
- Travel in and out of the UK freely.
- Use the visa as a stepping stone toward long-term immigration routes like the Skilled Worker or Innovator Founder visas.
Application Process: Step-by-Step
- Preparation: Apply up to 3 months before the job start date.
- Evidence: Must show £1,270 in personal savings (unless exempt).
- TB Testing: Required for applicants from specified countries.
- Submission: Apply online with identity verification via the UK Immigration: ID Check app or at a visa application centre.
- Decision Timeframe:
- Outside the UK: Typically 3 weeks.
- Inside the UK: Typically 8 weeks.
- Faster decision options are available for an additional fee.
For Sponsors: Setting Up a UK Entity
To sponsor a worker under this visa, an overseas business must:
Sponsors may initially issue up to 5 CoS under a provisional A-rating, subject to review and upgrade after compliance checks.
This is one of the few genuine self-sponsorship routes available. The most senior eligible overseas employee, often the business owner or director, can act as the Authorising Officer, Key Contact and Level 1 User for their own company all at once, and assign the Certificate of Sponsorship to themselves. In practice, this means a business owner can sponsor their own move to the UK through their own expanding company. If your business is brand new to the UK rather than an existing overseas company expanding here, see our page on self-sponsorship via the Skilled Worker route instead.
