Sponsor licence management
Sponsor Licence Compliance and Licence Management
The old four-year sponsor licence renewal requirement was removed on 6 April 2024. For most sponsors, the priority is now ongoing compliance, accurate SMS management and readiness for Home Office scrutiny.
Do sponsor licences still need renewing?
In most cases, no. Home Office sponsor guidance states that the requirement to renew a sponsor licence every four years was removed on 6 April 2024. A licence will normally remain valid until it is surrendered or revoked for non-compliance.
There are exceptions, including some time-limited routes such as UK Expansion Worker and Scale-up. Businesses should therefore treat licence management as an ongoing compliance exercise, not a diary reminder every four years.
How we help licence holders
Licence health check
We review your licence profile, key personnel, SMS records, sponsored workers and reporting history to identify immediate compliance gaps.
Home Office readiness
We help businesses prepare for announced or unannounced compliance visits by reviewing documents, systems and interview risk areas.
Change management
We advise on reportable changes, corporate restructuring, changes of ownership, addresses, authorising officers and Level 1 users.
Worker compliance
We assess salary, role, work location, right to work, absence and record-keeping issues affecting sponsored workers.
Suspension or revocation risk
Where the Home Office has raised concerns, we help prepare evidence, representations and remedial action plans.
Surrender or dormancy
Where a licence is no longer needed, we advise on surrender, worker implications and records that should be retained.
If you expected to renew your sponsor licence
For most sponsors, the former four-year renewal cycle no longer applies. Ongoing compliance is now the priority. If your organisation previously recorded a renewal date, use it as a practical review point to check your sponsor records, SMS users, sponsored worker files and reporting systems before the Home Office raises a concern.
We can provide a targeted review or a wider sponsor compliance audit depending on the size of the business and the number of sponsored workers.
Request a sponsor licence review
Tell us whether you need a routine compliance review, have received Home Office correspondence or are concerned about SMS records, salary, role changes or reporting duties.
