🚀 Call NA Law Solicitors for expert advice on your Innovator Founder Visa

The Innovator Founder Visa is designed for ambitious entrepreneurs looking to establish an innovative business in the UK. This visa is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with genuine, original, and scalable business ideas to contribute to the UK’s thriving economy.

Since its introduction in April 2023, the Innovator Founder Visa has replaced the Innovator and Start-Up visas, making it more accessible by removing the £50,000 minimum investment requirement.

Who is Eligible for the Innovator Founder Visa?

To qualify for the Innovator Founder Visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

✅ Age: Be at least 18 years old.
✅ Innovative Business Idea: Your business idea must be genuine, original, and scalable.
✅ Endorsement from an Approved Body: You must secure endorsement from a recognised endorsing body.
✅ English Language Proficiency: Meet the B2 CEFR level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
✅ Financial Support: Have sufficient personal savings to support yourself in the UK.
✅ Criminal Record Check: Pass a criminal background check.

What Makes a Viable Business Plan?

Your business plan is the core of your application. It must demonstrate:

🔹 Innovation: Your business must offer something unique to the UK market, filling a gap or solving an existing problem.
🔹 Viability: A well-structured, detailed, and profitable business plan.
🔹 Scalability: The potential for growth, including job creation and a positive economic impact.

Examples of Strong Business Ideas

✅ A tech startup that develops AI-driven legal compliance tools for businesses.
✅ A sustainable fashion brand that uses biodegradable materials to reduce waste.
✅ A mobile healthcare app that improves remote patient monitoring and diagnostics.

How to Secure an Endorsement

The endorsement process is a crucial step in the Innovator Founder Visa application. Only approved endorsing bodies can assess and validate your business idea.

Steps to Obtain an Endorsement

  • Identify an Endorsing Body: Choose one aligned with your business sector (e.g., tech, sustainability, finance).
  • Submit Your Business Plan: Provide a detailed business proposal for review.
  • Attend an Interview: Present your business idea and demonstrate its innovation, viability, and scalability.
  • Receive Your Endorsement Letter: If successful, you’ll receive an endorsement letter to include in your visa application.

Frequently Asked Questions on the Innovator Visa

There is no fixed minimum investment threshold, but you must show that you have enough funds to develop the business and support yourself and any dependants. Endorsing bodies will also consider whether your financial projections and funding are realistic for your sector.

The time required to obtain endorsement varies depending on the endorsing body and the complexity of your proposal. After you submit your visa application, a decision is usually made within a few weeks, with faster decisions possible through priority services in some locations.

You may be able to switch from certain routes, such as Skilled Worker or Student (after completing your course), as long as you meet all Innovator Founder requirements and do not fall within an excluded category. You must still secure endorsement and meet the English language, financial and suitability criteria.

The Rules allow certain secondary employment where the role is at or above RQF level 3 and complies with the conditions of your visa. Any additional work must not compromise your ability to play a leading role in developing and managing your endorsed business.

You can usually apply for ILR after 3 continuous years in the UK on the Innovator Founder (and/or Innovator) route if you meet the business success criteria, endorsement, residence and knowledge of life in the UK requirements. If you do not yet meet the ILR criteria, you may instead extend your permission with a new endorsement.

If your endorsing body withdraws its endorsement, the Home Office can curtail your permission, typically giving a short period to make a new application, such as for a different route. It is therefore important to maintain close communication with your endorsing body and seek legal advice if your business circumstances change.
